The Abstract Expression exhibition at the Royal Academy was exciting, dynamic and substantial! Abstract Expressionism has always been a favourite period of mine, therefore I had lowered expectations in case the curators hadn't managed to fill the exhibition with an adequate amount of Pollock paintings. There was certainly more than enough to see, in fact I left the gallery with a migraine seeing black dots and crisscrossing lines everywhere I looked. Only by experiencing the paintings and murals in real life can one actually comprehend the intensity of scale. Initially it is rather intimidating walking into the exhibition and being faced with large murals hanging from the walls glaring with violent slashes of colour. Abstract Expressionism includes artists such as Rothko, Pollock, De Kooning, Kline, Motherwell, and Gorky to mention a few. The exhibition displays numerous works by the previously named artists and even includes works that typically wouldn't be considered, such as sculptures. Overall I would recommend going even if you're not a fan of the Abstract Expressionists, the experience may change your mind.
